Concert-lessons for Schools

Since 1989 the Centre has offered intermediate schools a series of concert-lessons scheduled for the beginning of each school year in collaboration with Principals and Teachers. Classes, prepared in advance by their teachers and accompanied by them, assemble at the Auditorium at the Centre and listen to performances presented and explained by artists chosen by the Busoni Centre Management.

From 1989 to today, the number of schools involved has grown steadily, with some institutions from Municipalities in the Empoli-Valdelsa area and beyond also joining in.

The concert-lessons are run also with the collaboration of the Orchestra of Tuscany, the Music School of Fiesole, the “A. Vivaldi” Conservatorium of Alessandria and the “L. Cherubini” Conservatorium of Florence.

Since the 1991-92 school year, the concert-lessons have been taken into primary schools to allow the children to hear classical music live in their own school environment, and to familiarise them with the various instruments explained by the players themselves.

For performances by the Tuscan Regional Orchestra, school-children have been taken by their teachers to the theatre where they have been able to hear the programmes explained in advance. In the 1994-95 school year the “Conosciamo Busoni” (“Know Busoni”) project was launched. It aims at presenting the great Empoli musician. Lessons held during the regular timetable – taught by a person appointed by the Centre – provide information to children in classes and to the students of the three Educational Clubs about Busoni and his times, and recordings of his music and his own performances are played.

Each class then, accompanied by their teacher, pay a visit to the house where the artist was born, to see the memorabilia and documents preserved in the Museum.

At the end of the visit the children are encouraged to write down their impressions of the experience. The best ones receive a prize at the celebration that concludes the school year.
